What theta means
“Theta” generally refers to relatively low-frequency neural oscillations measured with techniques such as EEG. Exact band boundaries can vary by study and analysis convention.
Context matters
Theta activity can differ by brain region, task, age and state. Research may discuss theta during memory processes, drowsiness, navigation or cognitive control, but these contexts should not be compressed into a universal equation such as “more theta equals more creativity.”
Why audio products mention theta
Binaural-beat and entrainment products may choose a beat frequency that falls within a theta range and then imply a desired mental state. The 2023 systematic review found theta among the most frequently studied bands, but overall entrainment findings across studies were inconsistent.
